Abstract
This PhD study investigates how radiographers make clinical decisions within digitalised radiology workflows. Grounded in the field of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), it applies ethnographic methods to explore how technological, organisational, and social factors jointly shape radiographers’ everyday clinical decision-making process. The study thereby provides a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between human actors, digital systems, and organisational structures, and how these elements both support and challenge radiographers’ clinical judgement and decision-making.
The scientific contribution of this PhD study lies in its documentation and analysis of radiographers’ clinical decision-making as a distributed and situated phenomenon, where digital technologies are not merely tools, but active participants in collaborative dynamics. Practically, the study offers perspectives for designing digital radiology systems and organisational frameworks that ensure timely radiographer-to-radiologist consultation, integrate communication tools, and support the documentation of clinical justifications — all of which have proven to be important elements in supporting radiographers’ ability to make clinical decisions.
